How to Use the Tool
There are forty eight characteristics in total; these are each evaluated against two different dimensions, impact and capability.
To evaluate against impact you need to answer the question
'If this characteristic was 100% true of my business today how significant would its impact be?'
Note the emphasis on the word 'if' - It does not matter whether the characteristic actually exists in your business or not, you are only answering hypothetically.
The characteristics are rated on a scale as detailed.
- 6= Significant and dramatic impact
- 5= Considerable and important impact
- 4= Moderate and beneficial impact
- 3= Marginal and minor impact
- 2= Insignificant and negligible impact
- 1= No impact at all
To evaluate against capability you need to answer the question
'What is my business's current performance against this characteristic?'
This is the actual rating of how strongly you currently demonstrate the characteristic.
The characteristics are rated on a scale as detailed.
- 6= Outstanding and exceptional capability
- 5= High quality and superior capability
- 4= Satisfactory and acceptable capability
- 3= Variable and inconsistent capability
- 2= mediocre and ineffective capability
- 1= Non existent
Example
Take the characteristic below.
'We are able to distinguish between those customers who are simply satisfied and those who are our biggest fans. We understand why our 'fans' like us so much'.
'If this characteristic was 100% true of my business today how significant would its impact be?'
You may consider this would have a considerable and important impact and would score it 5 as shown.
'What is my business's current performance against this characteristic?'
You may decide that your current capability against this characteristic is 'variable and inconsistent' and would score it 3 as shown.
